Republicans Eating Boogers

We´ve all seen toddlers gross us out by eating their boogers. Why do they do such a disgusting thing? Because it makes them feel good.

The recent attempt by Tea Party Republicans to defund Obamacare is the equivalent of booger eating. It made them feel good, but it was not pretty to look at and the results were bound to turn out bad, which they did. Instead of the news covering the incompetent roll out of Obamacare, the lead stories were about the Republicans shutting down the government.

Don´t get me wrong, I am closer aligned to the Tea Party Republicans than the Crony Capitalist Republicans who protect their big campaign fund donors, or the Compassionate Conservative Republicans who can´t pay for their pet projects with tax revenue but pay it with more debt.

Critics from the start pointed out it was politically impossible for the Tea Party to use a government shutdown to defund Obamacare. In interviews, even Senator Ted Cruz was unable to explain how his efforts could succeed with Senate Democrats and President Obama sticking to their poll-tested position of doing nothing. His shut down partner Senator Mike Lee acknowledged that anyone who wants to criticize them ¨for proceeding in a fight we weren´t certain we could win, then they´ve got a fair point.¨

If you are going to pick a fight, pick a fight you can win.

The Democrats may be terrible at doing math when it comes to matching government spending with tax revenue, but they are better than the Tea Party when it comes to counting votes at a national level.

Surveys show that America is 35 percent conservative, and 25 percent liberal, with the other 40 percent in the middle. It should be easier to elect conservative presidents. However, the Democrat presidential candidate has gotten more popular votes than the Republican candidate in five of the last six elections. That´s pretty good considering liberals are outnumbered three to one. For conservatives to win the presidency in 2016, we need to get more votes than the liberals. Booger eating is not going to help us get those votes.
