Not So Happy Birthday Social Security
It's Social Security's birthday! Franklin Roosevelt signed it into law on August 14, 1935. It is fairly common knowledge among informed people that Social Security is underfunded and cannot deliver what it promises. President Clinton and Newt Gingrich were poised to tackle the issue in the late 1990's, but it was tabled when Clinton's impeachment took center stage. President Bush wanted to fix it, but his efforts went nowhere. President Obama, to no one's surprise given his political ineptitude, has done nothing.
It is doubtful that anything will be done until at least 2017 when hopefully we can elect a president courageous enough to lead on this important issue. In the meantime, we can cry and laugh about the situation with some political cartoons that communicate our dire situation:
